New community food market coming to Ilford (27 Feb 2019)
Plans to create a purpose-built food market as part of Spark Ilford has been given the green light by Redbridge Council.
Mercato Metropolitano (MM) received planning permission yesterday to start work on delivering Mercato Ilford which will transform the Town Hall car park into a truly sustainable and inclusive covered food market for the community.
The covered market will bring MM’s exciting food and drink offering to the area, providing healthy good food, community spirit and entrepreneurial opportunities.
Known for its successful covered market at Elephant and Castle, MM is due to start work soon for its official opening later this year.
Mercato Ilford will bring an array of community events for all including cookery classes, community lunches, activities and school holiday clubs.
The community market will also support ambitious local start-ups with an invaluable opportunity to make their business ideas a reality by identifying local entrepreneurs to operate within it.
Cllr Jas Athwal, Leader of the Council said: “This is fantastic news and is another step towards transforming our town centre into a vibrant cultural quarter. We are thrilled to be partnering with Mercato on this venture which will not only offer diverse, fresh produce for visitors but bring communities together through food and social events. This is a very exciting time for Ilford Town Centre.”
Spark Ilford also includes creative and enterprise projects with SPACE Ilford and Things Made Public.
SPACE recently received planning permission to run a public art gallery and creative studio spaces at Ilford Town Hall.
Things Made Public are working on designs for the Janice Mews building, which will complement the Spark offer. More details will be coming soon.
A consultation on plans for the closure of the Town Hall car park will be launching in March.
